But can we really accomplish something just by thinking about it? Focus on these five things and start manifesting manifest your life and goals today.

]]>
“Manifest” is a buzzword nowadays; everyone talks about it no matter the platform. You may be wondering, how can we accomplish something just by thinking? This is because of the magnetic power of your thoughts.

What you believe is what you become and what you receive.

Manifestation carries the idea of achieving your dreams by belief, clarity and attraction. It is a self-help practice that guides you to achieve your dreams through positive thinking and clarity in one’s mind.

Perhaps you have tried to manifest through viral techniques, but it is a little complicated as it requires understanding yourself and the law of attraction. That is where energies, time and habits have to invest. In a nutshell, we can explain this as,

It’s not just about accomplishing your dreams, but it’s also about spending your energies to do it.

In this journey to manifest your life and goals, here are five highly effective things that you must know.

1. Identify the negative thoughts.

We all have that inner voice that loves telling us that we have limited potential and why we can’t do certain things. However, our great mind manages to keep us at peace and maintain our comfort, but that inner critic made us such a victim whose life is full of self-criticism, inwardness, self-denial and a retreat from goal-directed activities. We all know that our energies are mostly burnt while dealing with these negative thoughts daily.

To identify negative thoughts, one must spend some time for daily check-ups and find out what energies you have absorbed today, how you are feeling, what you need, and did you react differently today. If yes, then why? Then identify those thoughts that positively affect you, those better serve your peace and positively impact your personality. And replace the negative thinking with that one.

Except for this, to analyse the patterns of your thoughts, you can make a journal where you can jot down or save them on your phone. Eventually, through this technique, you write your subconscious to the elevated patterns to work through the blockages.

2. Meditate

As we have discussed above, if you want to manifest your life and goals, it is important to have great insight into yourself, and in this journey, meditation is a great partner. In short, meditation is a great way to increase self-awareness, create calmness, reduce stress and anxiety, and helps to maintain focus on your goals.

According to Deepak Chopra, author, alternative medicine advocate, and wellness & meditation expert, Meditation is all about connecting with your soul. Part of maintaining your well-being is taking the time to disconnect from the outside to go within.

To successfully manifest your goals, you must be able to see, feel, believe, and embody your dreams as if you have already achieved them and also take action towards it. Meditation makes it easy to support you in your manifestation journey.

From walking meditation, apps and online coaches, you can find the one that feels good to you. And with connecting your mind and body, you can find a way to manifest your desired goal.

3. Work with positive affirmations:

Affirmations are compelling statements that tap into your conscious and unconscious mind to aid you in reaching your full potential. These affirmations not only allow you to challenge blockages and encounter your insecurities, but they shift your mindset to positive outcomes and successful manifestation.

Our subconscious plays an important role in our achievements and what we encounter in our daily lives. For example, if we believe that we are unlikely to be successful and accomplish a particular task; our minds will look for evidence that supports this thought. This is how our actions also become limited, making it difficult for us to manifest our life and goals.

According to Bob Proctor, a world-renowned speaker and law of attraction expert, “If you see it in your mind, you will hold it in your hand.”

So, affirmations help us transform our beliefs, enhance our potential, increase trust in ourselves and skyrocket our manifestation.

There are multiple ways to work with these affirmations. You can choose whatever suits you the best to cement your personality with positivity. You can write them down, practice them aloud in front of a mirror or hang them in the place where you frequently see them. However, to find effective affirmations, you can also get our list and choose the best for you.

4. Use visualisation

Visualisation not just aids in mapping the activity, but it will also inspire you and give you the motivation to build habits that will help manifest your life and goals. Through visualisation, one can get clear on what they want, how to connect to your purpose, and embody your highest state. For example, to start your own business, you can visualize how it will feel after helping your VIP client resolve a significant problem. Or, if you have fitness goals, imagine the fantastic result and how great it feels after working out.

Thus, when you imagine these scenarios you manifest, you begin to see, feel, believe, and embody what it would be like to experience it. Therefore, we can also say that visualisation helps you to vibrate at the correct frequency to manifest your life and goals.

One of the objections to this daily visualizing approach is that it may result in disappointment, but this is not the case. Instead, this approach is sued to set up next-level results for the future, which eventually make you perform extraordinary in the present and ensure that you will lead to an amazing opportunity soon.

A couple of things to think about when visualising:

Results and opportunities can take many different forms. Knowing that your manifested development and the options you will attract into your life may differ from what you had initially planned for is perfectly fine because it contributes to what you want.

Another point to consider is that visualization works best when you concentrate. So instead of trying to visualise 200 things, why not try three things you want and focus on? Then, when you are more focused, you can identify and attract more opportunities to help you achieve your goals.

5. Practice journaling, gratitude, and letting go every day:

Do you know what the token of manifestation is? It is learning and having insight into the subconscious. Do you know why? This is because through this, you can understand what habits are beneficial and if there is something due to which you are sabotaging opportunities.

Journaling helps in building self-reflection and self-awareness, expressing gratitude, and manifesting your goals.

You don’t need to write a whole essay when journaling. If you are someone who doesn’t like writing as much, you can always use dot points. And if you find writing challenging, you can always use quotes and pictures to inspire you. Journaling is meant to be easy and enjoyable, and you look forward to it every day.

Practicing gratitude is part of your journaling. It is also a key that unlocks a lack mentality and attracts more opportunities in life. As daily inspired habits and actions bring you closer to your goal, gratitude helps you develop an appreciative mind-set and find happiness. As we know, a happy mind is fertile; listing things you are grateful for enriches you with a sense of satisfaction.

Do you ever think about what will happen when you become attached to a particular outcome? You could not proceed in life and became limited to what you could have.

One way to practice surrender is to write out your goal or desire, and then underneath it, write out a few things that you can do in the present moment to help manifest that goal. For example, suppose your goal is to manifest freedom. In that case, whether it’s in terms of finances or time, something you can do in the present moment may be to make a list of things you could do with your time or money if you had more of it or talk to people who have already achieved a similar goal to get advice and ideas. But if you get too attached to an outcome, you will be hindered and unable to proceed in the journey. However, when you practice surrender, you let go of the fear that you will not get what you want, and instead, you will continue to work for what is meant for you.

When you let go of attachment, you will find that you can manifest your goals and desires quicker because you are no longer holding yourself back with your passion. Instead, you are open to new possibilities and trust that what is meant for you will find you.

Conclusion

Manifestation is all about what you think and what you attract. The more you focus on your wants, the more you get them. So, if you want to manifest your life and goals, focus on these five things and see how effective they are.

 1. Identify the negative thoughts
 2. Meditate
 3. Work with positive affirmations
 4. Use visualisation
 5. Practice journaling, gratitude and letting go every day

The post If You Want To Be Great, Be Resilient! How True Grit Can Help You Manifest And Attract Success appeared first on You Want Group.

]]>

Last year was a challenging year for many of us. Like many Melbourne businesses, we went through a period of uncertainty and stress. We were fortunate to have survived. A lot of it had to do with us having to adjust our mindset to a new way of thinking and working. Many of us are still reeling from the shock of last year let alone the thought of having to deal with a new reality where we may have to live with COVID. So, I want to write about resilience this week. Life with COVID is going to be filled with roadblocks and detours. Some of them may seek to derail you but I believe that all of them can be overcome by being resilient. If you have true grit you can rise against the odds.

I feel so blessed to be able to share my story with you this week. I came to Australia as a teenager and it has been an incredible journey for me to beat the odds and find success in my life. I did it and I know you can do it too.

What resilience is

I believe resilience is important for success. The difficulties we face in life do not have to become events to endure. We can use the power of our inner resolve to turn these challenges into opportunities to learn, to improve and to be better. I believe that there are lessons to be learned at every phase of our life. If we adopt a positive outlook in life, we can find the silver lining even in the darkest storm. Remember that every emotion and feeling we experience whether happy or sad becomes another droplet of knowledge in our reservoir of strength that we can draw upon when we need it. That is resilience. It is the stuff that motivates you to strive for your dreams. If you have resilience, you develop the power to manifest and attract success into your life.

Resilience is the capacity to overcome emotional and mental roadblocks. It is the ability to survive adversity, threats, trauma, and other stresses. It is the ability to bounce back stronger and better. Whether it’s losing someone or something you loved, being bullied, or abused, being made redundant, coping with sickness and mental illness, or being in a life-changing accident.

Who says life is perfect? Life is full of ups and downs. Remember the proverbial phrase: When life throws you lemons, make lemonade? The truth is if you are confronted by too many lemons, it becomes hard to make lemonade. So, I ask why not take this a step further? Let’s control the number of lemonades life throws at you. That way we can decide on how much lemonade to make and when we want to make them.

What resilience is not

Resilience is not a trait that only certain people are born with. It’s not a DNA thing. It’s a set of beliefs, actions, and behaviours that anyone can learn. There are many aspects of your life you can control, modify, or improve. That is resilience.

Elements of resilience

Three elements are essential to resilience. These are:

Challenges

If you can view difficulties and setbacks as challenges, you are on track to harnessing the power of manifestation and attraction. Challenges are not insurmountable odds. They are a call to you to participate in a show of strength or ability. It is something that can be defeated. It is something you can win at. So how about it? Want to take on the challenge to achieve your life’s goals and manifest a better life for yourself? Ready to attract success into your life?

Several years ago, I was involved in a serious car accident. Our car was damaged but Thai (my partner) and I escaped with minor scratches. For weeks after that, I could not drive a car. I was so shaken by the accident I could not feel safe inside a car anymore. It was only after I re-evaluated the situation and started looking at it from a different perspective that I regained my confidence. Instead of focusing on fear, I focused on my thankfulness that Thai and I were alive.

Try channelling difficulties and setbacks into challenges that can be overcome. Unfortunately, our brains are wired to look at a worst-case scenario. So, it’s up to us to change focus and redirect it into the positive. If you can do this, you are on your way to manifesting your own success.

Commitment

Commitment is not just a word; it is actual action. It is the magic sauce that turns dreams and wishes into reality. If you were sitting for an exam, you have to put in the hard yards to pass it, right? If you were an athlete, you need to train to excel. That’s a commitment – putting feelings into genuine action to deliver the outcomes you want. Here’s the thing. Commitment is not procrastination. Nor is it a side gig. If you want to achieve your goals, try manifesting the behaviours that make you successful. You don’t do it randomly or when it suits you. You do it all the time. You live it. That’s commitment.

Our earliest workshops were a complete disaster. In one of our business networking events, we received 30 expressions of interest. We thought all 30 would show up. 5 people came and 3 of the 5 were friends who had come to support us. One walked out in the middle of the event! That left us with 1 participant and 3 friends. We soon realised that we were not doing it right. Neither of us had any clue how to run a business profitably. We needed to learn the tools of the trade. We needed to know what we were doing wrong, so we decided to conduct debriefs of every session we conducted. It took us nearly two years of single-minded focus and commitment to become successful. Those two years were tough, but we stayed the course. We never once gave up. Now we run popular workshops that are booked months in advance. Commitment and focus got us there. It can get you where you want to be too.

Personal Control

Channel your energy into what you have control over, not what you have no control over, and you are more likely to achieve the outcomes you desire. Put your effort into the areas you know will deliver the best results and you are in a better position to take charge of your destiny.

I am a manifestation and leadership strategist, mentor, and coach. For many years, I have been helping others create strategies to maximise the results and find success whether it’s personal or professional. This year, I reached the pinnacle of my career even during Covid. Aside from winning the Gold Stevie Award for Female Executive of the Year, two silver awards for Mentor or Coach of the Year and Woman of the Year, I also become a #1 Amazon best-selling author within the same month. Do I think I’ve learned and achieved everything? No. Because I truly believe that we as humans have so much potential to be more than what we are. We have the power to attract success into our lives and to make our dreams come true. So let’s begin this wonderful journey of self-discovery together.

Resilience is the beacon that lights up the path to success. It helps you to reflect on what you have to do or give up in order to achieve your dreams. It is the guiding principle that helps us work harder towards what we want in life. If you are resilient, you shine a bright and bold light on your dreams. Your dreams become your vision. You realise that dreams are not wishful thinking but attainable goals. Once you reach that realisation it becomes easier for you to build resilience or grit. You start believing that your dreams can come true and you work towards achieving this reality.

I wasn’t born a successful leader. I earned it. I lived a sheltered life until about 15 years of age when I was sent to Australia – on my own. It was a steep learning curve. I was in a strange land amongst people from a culture I had no understanding of and self-awareness. I did not have friends or family to support me and for many years of my young adult life, I made mistakes that I am not proud of. But somehow, I survived. I learned that bad things that happened to me do not define me. That I can rise above any circumstance so long as I stay true and believe in myself.

Last week, I received news that I had won the 2021 Stevie Gold Award for Female Executive of the Year. I also won two silvers for Mentor or Coach of the Year and Woman of the Year for the ‘Women in Business’ Category. The awards came at a time when my life is on a trajectory to success. I own a successful business. I am a popular leadership strategist and coach. I am in a happy relationship, and I’ve just recently published my new book. How did I do it? I manifested my own success, and I can show you how you can do it too in my upcoming book ‘Great Leadership Starts with You. Be the Leader You Want to Be’. In the book, I discussed at length how I mastered self-awareness and used the power of my mind to manifest and attract success into my life.

In the book, I revealed 5 ways how I mastered self-awareness and manifested success. Here’s a snapshot of each:

Daily self-reflection

Self-reflection is the ability to evaluate your behaviour, actions, and motives. It is about taking stock of your life and being honest with yourself about what you may discover. It helps you recognise your abilities and put things in perspective, so you know how to act and behave every time.

I practise daily self-reflection. At the end of each day before bed, I spend 10-15 minutes debriefing myself. The subject for the debrief is ‘me’. It’s an easy step that anyone can adopt. Start by asking yourself: ‘What have I done well today?’ and ‘What can I do better?’ Aim for one improvement a day. Even small steps can lead to big things. If you take one tiny little step a day for a year, it adds up to 365 steps closer to your goals. Here’s another secret: It’s never too old to start taking baby steps. So, why not start today?

Psychometric tests

Personality and psychometric tests help you understand yourself. I love using personality profiles and guiding my clients to increasing their self-awareness. The more you understand yourself, the closer you are to manifesting your genius.

Journaling

I am a bit of a foodie. I love cooking as a form of relaxation. When I come across a new recipe I like, I usually make a record of it. Whether I download it or jot it down, I need a record of it because I cannot easily recall all the ingredients or every step of the instructions.

Likewise, if you want to master self-awareness, you may want to jot down lessons you have learnt each day. Start a journal and record anything that you feel will be helpful whether it’s a gesture that has made you happy, an interesting observation or an event that may have upset others. You can also use your journal to write down your goals and plans and any ideas you have about how you want to manifest success. Later, you can turn it into a strategy with actionable steps.

Feedback

It’s hard to be your own critic all the time and still stay objective. Sometimes, it is good to seek the help of others. Consider feedback as market research on yourself. Effective market research requires participants’ input. You can’t be the only participant. Consider any feedback as constructive even if they are not what you want to hear. Find someone you can trust to give you an honest and objective feedback. Don’t get upset if the feedback is not what you want to hear. Focus on the outcome. Use it as an opportunity to improve so the next time the same question arises, you will get a more positive response. Now that’s a win!

Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness or mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation that teaches you to be intensely aware of yourself and your surroundings. It helps you focus on the moment and to hone on your thoughts and feelings without been detracted by them. It is a great way to declutter your mind and not overthink things.

When you have mastered self-awareness, you are ready to manifest success into your life. The next steps include setting goals, working towards these goals, being mindful and appreciative of what you have received, removing mental barriers, and focusing on manifesting the success you want.

When I sat down to write this article, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with the current global crisis that we’re up against.

In such trying times, it is a challenge to find the motivation to put that aside and find the concentration to hit the screen and do the job.

And it struck me that often when we dream for success, we seem to have a vision of what we want to achieve. It could be the money you want to make or the promotion you’ve been waiting on. Or freedom and happiness. Success is subjective. And often when we dream of this abundance, we feel so pumped and motivated, but three days into working for it, we’re finding excuses to not work for it at all. Leading to excuses and disappointments and sabotaging of our dreams.

So often people have so many dreams they want to achieve and yet they are not willing to do what it takes to get there. You get distracted by the riches and the shiny short cuts. And you look at other people and go down a spiral of why I am not good enough, when in reality, you know you’re good enough, you’ve seen the dream, you have a vision, you have a goal, you know how to get there. But you’re not willing to put in the effort, the discipline, the sacrifice it takes, to get there.

A classic example is all gym memberships go up around the beginning of the year, because we all think that we are going to hit the gym and achieve our fitness goal, whether we try to lose weight, build our muscles or be stronger. Come end of January, we’re locked in an annual gym contract with zero motivation to go and go on about our lives and wonder why nothing has been achieved.

That’s why we don’t need more motivation, we need Inspiration. So we can be inspired from within and get things done.

First and foremost, identify the problem.

Write down, on a paper, everything you want to achieve, all your goals. Just a list one below the other.

Now, on a scale of one to ten, rate them on how likely you believe in yourself to achieve them, if you were to start today. With zero being less likely and ten being more likely.

This will help you analyse where you are in life right now and what goals you believe you could achieve. There is no point for you to put it if you don’t even believe it. For e.g. one of your goals could be Finding a new career, getting a promotion etc. you rate it 8, then you are already inspiration for it, you just got to start and continue with discipline.

But if changing careers is rated 3 on your goals list, then you’re not ready for it, it will be that much harder for you to achieve it.
It’s easier to go for the low hanging fruit and achieve as you go. It keeps you motivated, inspired and on your toes for the next challenge.

“Motivation is like a drug, you need it to get started and keep at it, but inspiration, give your purpose and the determination to persevere. Inspiration inspires you from within. You then do what you love and love what you do. ”

Next, Mind the Language

Observe the conversation you have with people around you, pay attention to the words you use. Your words become your reality, if you keep saying the things that negatively impact you, you’ll be in a negative headspace. For e.g. I don’t use the word ‘expensive’, because then, you put your value under the value of a material object. And it’s tough to get out of that circle. I say, ‘it’s not worth it’ or I ask myself ‘how can I afford it?’ Or even in a tough situation, I don’t say that ‘its’ so bad/hard’, I say that it’s ‘challenging’.

It sets you up for a challenge instead of making you feel like you’re not good enough or don’t deserve it.

Finally, your software needs an update

If you approach your challenges with the attitude of ‘know it all’, you’ll never learn anything. And to learn, your cup needs to be empty, so you can fill it up as you go by investing in yourself and maintaining a student mindset. Coronavirus indeed gives us an opportunity to upskill ourselves whether it is reading books, listening to podcasts and audiobooks. Watching youtube and videos.or online courses. do whatever it takes to understand yourself . We all have different learning styles. Video works for some, audio for some even taking notes. Do whatever it takes to understand your strengths and challenges. And find relevant information or mentors for any challenges you have. The better you learn, the faster you achieve. You need to upgrade your software to stay in the game.

I hope some of this article helps you get started with your goals. I hope you aim for the stars and accomplish them.

Tell me in the comments below how you keep yourself inspired?

What makes you happy to go to work every morning?

Is it because the work you do is stimulating? Do you feel appreciated and valued? Maybe you’re working in a great office environment? Or could it be that you are working with some amazing people? Or is something entirely different?

Job satisfaction is essentially about being happy in one’s job. It is the feeling of pleasure and achievement we experience at work because we know what we do matters. The speed and efficacy of our work are often affected by our happiness level. The happier we are at work, the more efficient and effective we become. On the other hand, if we are unhappy, this unhappiness is reflected in the quality of our work. Unhappiness at work can affect our mental and physical state. It can also impact our relationships with our family and friends. In other words, unhappiness at work can translate to unhappiness in life.

Contrary to popular belief, money is not the biggest motivator for job satisfaction. Money is important but it cannot buy you happiness at work if the reasons for your unhappiness are not related to how much you are paid. Take Eric Yuan for instance. Yuan had a six-figure salary, but he wasn’t happy at work. In a recent interview with CNBC’s ‘Make It’, Yuan said ‘Every day when I woke up, I wasn’t very happy. I even did not want to go to work.’ Job satisfaction became a central focus for Yuan’s new company. This year, the company he founded – Zoom – was named one of the top ten happiest companies in the world to work in.

As a leadership coach, I sometimes ask the participants in my workshops to identify three elements they think can lead to job satisfaction. Apart from a sense of purpose, participants identify autonomy, flexibility, recognition, belonging and good relationship with people at work.

Working from home in lockdown, Thai and I thought nothing of allowing staff flexible hours to work. The first week we tried it, I received a text from a part-time employee that works elsewhere too. It had one-word ‘Thanks!’ followed by several happy emojis. Reading it made me happy and I’ve been trying to deconstruct this emotion.

All this while, I’ve focused on the staff’s happiness. What are the things we can do as a company to make our staff feel happy and fulfilled in their jobs? Are we doing enough? Can we do more? It had not occurred to me that a random act of kindness could bring happiness to me – the giver.

If a random act of kindness can make the giver happy, imagine our level of happiness if we can frame our acts in specific, concrete terms rather than abstract ones? For instance, giving our staff some flexibility to take time to work as they need or look after their child is better than just saying I want the staff to be happy. As managers, we know that happy employees produce better quality work, are less likely to make mistakes and will stay loyal to the organisation. Likewise, a happy manager is easier to work with, can get more work done and achieve better outcomes. So, why not give it a go?

The dragonfly effect is a concept mooted by a group of Stanford researchers. The dragonfly is the only insect in the world that can move in any direction when all its wings are working in concert. It symbolises the importance of how small acts can have a ripple effect to create big changes. I’ve been thinking about how we can use this symbol to create a happy work culture.

Consider the four principles as the four wings of the dragonfly: 1) Focus 2) Own 3) Engage and 4) Act.

Remember, you are using these principles in the context of creating happiness for your staff. So, don’t plan organisational goals like meeting deadlines or saving cost. Look at your staff’s emotional and mental wellbeing as the starting point for your planning.

1. Focus on specific goals

Identify a single and measurable goal that can make your staff happy. Define the goal clearly – as you would any organisational goal. Don’t describe abstracts like: ‘My goal is to make my staff happy.’ Be specific. ‘My goal is to make my staff happy by giving them some flexibility to adjust to returning to the office.’

Framing your goal makes it clearer and easier for you to achieve it so be specific about what you want to achieve.

2. Own your happiness strategy

The best way to create a message that is authentic and memorable is to cut through the noise. If you want others to believe it, you have to convince yourself first. Speak from the heart. Be honest. You must genuinely want to make your staff happy. Everything else will flow from there. Happiness has a ripple effect that will translate to their productivity at work. If you are not truthful about your intentions, your strategy may not work.

3. Engage

Once you have the staff’s interest, you can start engaging them in your goal of happiness. Engaging people is about compelling others to care deeply about your cause. If you want to have some flexibility in the workplace, it is not just you who has to be on board. You need the involvement of others in the team too. Engagement has little to do with logic or reason. You might have brilliant arguments why people should get involved but if you cannot get ‘buy-in’, you will not succeed.

Engagement is about creating the right emotional connection with people so they can see and feel what you are seeing and feeling.

4. Act

To act, you empower and enable others to work. If you have been successful in bringing some happiness to your team, then make it an organisational-wide project. Inspire other managers to take the lead from you and bring happiness to their teams too. The fourth wing of the dragonfly is crucial to closing the loop and creating an organisational culture that is vibrant and inclusive.

The four wings of the dragonfly are a metaphor for making a difference in the lives of others. Nearly all managers would like their employees to be happy because we know a happy worker produce better quality work and deliver results. A happy worker is also less likely to leave the organisation. They are genuinely enthusiastic about the company’s success and will work hard to ensure this success. Perks are attractive but they do not always address internal issues. Praise and recognition are motivating but only if the recipient believes them to be genuine.

If once in a while, we can pause focusing on we want and orient ourselves to what others want, we are closer to finding out how we can help our staff be happy in their jobs. And as I have discovered in recent times, the pleasure we feel when we know we’ve done something good for others is priceless.

One of the few good things to come out of working from home is that you get more time to pursue activities that you probably wouldn’t have time to do if things were normal. I have been meaning to read Michele Obama’s ‘Becoming’ since it was published but a busy pre-COVID schedule made it take longer than usual to finish the book. Being in lockdown since March, however, changed all that. I managed to finish the book recently. It was a gratifying read. ‘Becoming’ is deeply personal and empowering. In the book, Michele Obama candidly discussed family, love, career and of course, her time in the White House.

One of the phrases that resonate with me when I read ‘Becoming’ was ‘Am I good enough?’ Michele Obama asked herself this question several times in the book. Her reflections shaped by her experiences and her environment helped her become who she is today.

Self-awareness is about the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively. If you have a clearer view of who you are, you will make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively. Brene Brown describes it brilliantly when she writes that leaders without self-awareness are a huge energy drain – not just for themselves but for the people who work with them. They also cultivate an eggshell culture that is dominated by fear and hurt. Self-aware leaders, on the other hand, build success by instilling confidence and promoting inclusivity.

As a leadership coach, I have seen firsthand the power of self-awareness. I also know how easily attainable this skill is. So, this week, I would like to share some of my ideas with you.

DEFINING SELF-AWARENESS

According to organisational psychologist and author, Dr Tasha Eurich, there are two categories of self-awareness: internal self-awareness and external self-awareness.

Internal self-awareness is associated with our belief systems, values, and aspirations. It is about who we are and what we stand for. It relates to our happiness, job satisfaction and sense of control. On the flip side is anxiety, stress, and depression.

External self-awareness, on the other hand, is our understanding of how others view us in relation to the factors discussed above. Leaders who can understand how others feel about them are more capable of demonstrating empathy than those who cannot understand others.

Success is not indicative of self-awareness. A good leader can have an abundance of self-confidence and other traits, but they are not necessary, self-aware. Research by HRB shows that only 10-15% of successful managers and business leaders have actual self-awareness.

Also, there is no correlation between internal and external self-awareness. This means that a leader can have a high degree of internal self-awareness but little external self-awareness or vice versa. The diagram of the four archetypical leaders below explains:

Self-awareness

HOW SUCCESS CAN HINDER SELF-AWARENESS

Experience and power can give a leader a false sense of confidence over their performance and abilities. As their power grows, they can become less willing to listen to others because they think they know better or because feedback can come with a cost. For example, the experienced marketing director who thinks he/she knows everything about the industry may choose not to conduct crucial research. A successful CEO who has made up his mind on how to progress a project may not want feedback from others that could potentially derail his/her plans.

I like to challenge the managers at my workshop to consider reasons that can hinder their self-awareness. The most common reply is a cliché – ‘It is lonely at the top!’ At executive floor, a CEO has fewer opportunities to interact with the shop floor. This means less chances of receiving genuine and candid feedback. Also, their position of power becomes a barrier to communication. A clerk who is uncomfortable talking to the boss is more likely to hold back important feedback.

To find out what is going on, leaders have to find a way to encourage their workers (from all levels) to speak comfortably and candidly with them. If you do not know what is really happening in your organisation, you cannot lead effectively.

AM I GOOD ENOUGH? REFLECTION VS INTROSPECTION

Introspection doesn’t always improve self-awareness. Whenever I make this statement, I get a reaction from the managers I am training. Most participants assume introspection – examining our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours – make us more aware of who we are and therefore gives us the self-awareness we need to succeed.

While it is true that introspection helps us contextualise our actions and behaviours, it focuses on the individual i.e. ourselves.

Introspection answers the ‘why’.

‘Why did I lose my temper in the meeting?’ (Behaviour).

‘Why do I dislike A so much?’ (Emotion).

‘Why do I not like this idea?’ (Attitude).

Usually, many of the answers we are seeking do not exist in our conscious mind. Our emotions, attitudes and behaviours are influenced by our unconscious. To compensate, we make up answers that can explain things. Not all these answers are true.

Leaders who reflect on their roles and the impact their roles are having on others, however, develop a greater sense of awareness. Essentially, we ask the ‘what’ and ‘how’ rather than the ‘why’. ‘What am I doing here?’ ‘What is the fallout of the decision I make?’ ‘How will it impact my staff?’ ‘How do I get my workers to talk candidly with me?’ Self-reflection is about asking ‘Am I good enough?’ And by whose standards? Mine? Ours? Theirs? Self-reflection extends beyond an honest and objective appraisal of ourselves. It is also about the willingness to accept candid responses from others and to acknowledge the work of others. Managers who focus on developing both internal and external self-awareness, learn to see themselves better and in the process become better leaders. Finally, no matter how much progress you make, there is always more to learn. That is why self-awareness is such a rewarding journey.

Have you started questioning ‘Am I good enough?’
